Tools and Supplies

Gather up the following tools and supplies to make a resin coffee bean coaster:

  • Clear resin
  • Square silicone mold
  • Glass glitter
  • Disposable medicine cups
  • Popcicle sticks (or something disposable for mixing the resin)
  • Heat gun
  • Whole coffee beans
  • Sandpaper

How to make a resin coffee bean coaster

We will work in layers to create the resin coffee bean coaster.  You will want to make sure each layer of resin is firm to touch before proceeding onto the next step.  The amount of resin you need will vary depending on the size of your mold and the amount of coffee beans you use.

Step 1:  Pour a thin clear layer of resin into the mold

Follow the instructions from the resin manufacture and mix about 2 tablespoons of resin.  I like to use disposable medicine cups and disposable stirrers to mix the resin.  Carefully pour the resin into a silicone square mold.  If you notice air bubbles, apply heat to pop the bubbles.  I like to use my heat gun to get the job done.  Wait until the resin is curred before moving onto the next step.

Step 2:  Create another layer of resin with the whole coffee beans

Mix another 2 tablespoons of resin.  Carefully pour the resin into the mold.  Carefully add the coffee beans in the mold to prevent the appearance of new air bubbles.  Once you are satisfied with the arrangement of the coffee beans, wait until the resin is curred before moving onto the next step.

Step 3:  Create another layer of resin

Once again, mix another 2 tablespoons of resin.  Pour it into the mold and allow it to cure before proceeding to the next step.  This will create a nice gap between the coffee beans and the final glitter layer.

Step 4:  Create another layer of resin with glass glitter

Now it is time to add a bit of bling to the mold.  Mix a tablespoon of resin and add the glass glitter to the mixture.  Carefully pour it into the mold and allow it to cure.

Step 5: Demold the coaster

Use the resin manufacture’s cure time as a guideline to when you can safely demold your coaster.

Step 6: Sand the edges of the coaster

You may notice the edges of you coaster are sharp to touch.  Sand the edges in a well ventilated area.

Ashley, I’m thinking about trying to make the coffee bean coasters. I’m not a big DIYer. My question, when you say 2 tbsps. (at a time) is that just for one coaster or is that enough for 6 coasters (the base layer, etc)?

it has been a while since I made this but I think 2 tablespoons was enough for one coaster (but possibly two coasters) 🙂 For the first layer, you might be able to stretch 2 tablespoons for 2 coasters.
