Hello everyone, today I’m sharing how to make 8-bit pixel Cheep Cheep from the NES version of Super Mario Bros. I created this project for July’s Art of Geek Challenge. The theme was Super Mario. I followed the same technique I used to create 8-bit pixel Link from the original The Legend of Zelda game.

How to make 8-bit pixel Cheep Cheep in 5 easy steps

    1. Draw 1.5″ grid lines
    2. Route along the grid lines
    3. Cut out Cheep Cheep’s silhouette
    4. Prep Pixel Cheep Cheep for painting
    5. Paint Pixel Cheep Cheep

Step 1: Draw 1.5″ grid lines

Use a ruler to mark grid lines space 1.5″ apart.

Step 2: Route along the grid lines

Install a v-groove router bit and route along the grid lines. Use a clamp edge guide to ensure straight lines.

The start of another pixel project. 😊 It’s not my project idea for the @artofgeekchallenge 🤔 but it is a character from the Super Mario universe. 😊 . #vgroove #whitesiderouterbits #makitacompactrouter #makitarouter #router #plywood #scrapwoodproject #kregmobileprojectcenter #mobileprojectcenter #woodworking #woodwork #woodworker

Step 3: Cut out Cheep Cheep’s silhouette

Cut out the Cheep Cheep’s shape with a jigsaw (or use a bandsaw).

Step 4: Prep Pixel Cheep Cheep for painting

Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Cheep Cheep.  I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.

I got the main shape cut out. I need to clean up a few spots before painting pixels next. 😊 Can you identify the character? 🤔 #supermariobros . #aogmario #supermario #geekcraft #nerdcraft #geekdiy #woodwork #woodworker #woodworking #mfpbehindthescenes #pixelproject #8bitmario #8bit #cheepcheep #pixelcraft #maker #makersgonnamake

Step 5: Paint Pixel Cheep Cheep

Paint each pixel on Cheep Cheep. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used paint brushes for painting miniatures to paint in the crevices.

If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat.

I am really happy with how pixel Cheep Cheep turned out and look forward to working on my next pixel project!
