<p>Hello everyone! In this post, I&#8217;m sharing details on how I made my latest pixel art creation: an 8-bit Black Mage from Final Fantasy!</p>

<p>This is a new style of pixel art for me. It was largely inspired by abstract pieces I&#8217;ve spotted online. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make an 8-bit Black Mage</h2>

<p>This project is a great way to make a dent in your scrap wood pile. I used 2&#215;4 off cuts to create the Black Mage.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-2.jpg?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4394" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-2.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-2.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-2.jpg?resize=320%2C320&amp;ssl=1 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>2&#215;4 scraps for the project</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Rip 2x4s into 3/4&#8243; square rods</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-3.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4395" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-3.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-3.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>3/4&#8243; square rods</figcaption></figure>

<p>I started off by ripping off the rounded corner of the 2&#215;4 scraps before ripping the boards down into 3/4&#8243; square rods.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Crosscut the square rods into 1&#8243; &#8211; 1 1/2&#8243; pieces</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-4.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4396" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-4.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>1&#8243; &#8211; 1 1/2&#8243; pieces</figcaption></figure>

<p>Next up crosscut the square rods into pieces varying in heights of 1&#8243; to 1 1/2&#8243;. Alternate between different bevels as you cut the pieces.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-5.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4401" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-5.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Plain pixels nicely arranged</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Color the pixels</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-6.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4397" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-6.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-6.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Wood Stains</figcaption></figure>

<p>Group the wooden pieces into 4 different piles: one for each color in the black mage. </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Black: 194 pieces</li><li>Gold: 43 pieces</li><li>Tan: 40 pieces</li><li>Aqua: 107 pieces</li></ul>

<p>I originally used stain colors, but went back and painted the gold and tan pieces with acrylic paint because I wasn&#8217;t able to get get a good color match.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-7.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4398" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-7.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-7.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Wood pixels grouped and stained</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Assemble the Black Mage</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-11.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4399" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-11.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-11.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption><a href="https://amzn.to/2XPVeJB">FF DOT: The Pixel Art of Final Fantasy</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Next up, glue together the pixels. I used an image from the book <a href="https://amzn.to/2XPVeJB">FF DOT: The Pixel Art of Final Fantasy</a> as my reference.</p>

<p>I also used two pieces of scrap plywood to create a jig for keeping the pixels square.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-8.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-8.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-8.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Dry fitting the pixels</figcaption></figure>

<p>Once the glue drys, spray the Black Mage with a few coats of gloss spray paint and enjoy!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8-Bit Final Fantasy Black Mage</h2>

<p>I wasn&#8217;t too pleased with my job of gluing, but overall I&#8217;m really happy with how it turned out. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-10-1.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4402" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-10-1.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/8-bit_final_fantasy_black_mage_pixel_art_woodworking_scrap_wood_2x4-10-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>8-bit Final Fantasy Black Mage</figcaption></figure>

<p>Hello everyone, in this tutorial I&#8217;m sharing how to make your very own Pikachu resin pendants. This is a pretty simple DIY project where the most tedious and critical step is the paint job. You can use the finished pendants on a necklace or glue a magnet to the backside to hang documents on a refrigerator.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been a fan of Pokemon for many years. As a child, I always look forward to watching a new episode of the TV show during Saturday morning cartoons. I also spent many hours playing <a href="https://amzn.to/2Wvnqik">Pokemon Yellow on the Gameboy Pocket</a> trying to collect all 150 Pokemon. I have so many fond memories of the series and was super excited to see the <a href="https://amzn.to/2Wvnqik">Pokemon Indigo League</a> available on Netflix. I started re-watching the show with my son and felt motivated to create some Pokemon themed projects.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What You&#8217;ll Need</h2>

<p>To make the Pikachu pendant you&#8217;ll need the following items:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0">Pikachu Ice Mold</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2HKaq5b">Casting Resin</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2UdRyl1">Resin Mixing Cups</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2UdRyl1">Resin Stirring Sticks</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2HKMm2f">Disposable Gloves</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2FCfW6x">Golden Sunset Spray Paint</a></li><li>Gloss Spray </li><li>Red, Black, and White Acrylic Craft Paints</li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2UgimkE">Miniature Paint Brushes</a></li><li>A needle</li><li>Sandpaper</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-2.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Pokemon Pikachu Silicone Mold (Think Geek)" class="wp-image-3690" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><figcaption>Pokemon Pikachu Silicone Mold (Think Geek)</figcaption></figure>

<p>NOTE: As of writing this tutorial, I noticed the ice mold that I purchased is not currently in stock. Here&#8217;s an alternative <a href="https://amzn.to/2U9UKyY">silicone Pikachu mold</a>. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make Pikachu Resin Pendants</h2>

<p>Here&#8217;s how to make the Pikachu resin pendants in three steps!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-32.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="How to make Pikachu resin pendants or magnets" class="wp-image-3691" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-32.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-32.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>How to make Pikachu resin pendants or magnets</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Mix resin and carefully pour it into the mold</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2HKaq5b"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-5.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Amazing Casting Resin" class="wp-image-3692" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><figcaption>Amazing Casting Resin</figcaption></figure>

<p> <strong>IMPORTANT NOTE</strong>: Before starting make sure you handle resin with great care (wear gloves + work in a well ventilated area) and follow the manufacture&#8217;s instructions.</p>

<p>I used <a href="https://amzn.to/2HKaq5b">Alumilite&#8217;s Amazing Casting Resin</a> for this project. This resin cures white in 10 minutes. This doesn&#8217;t give you very much time to work with.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-9.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Amazing casting resin curing inside of the Pikachu silicone mold" class="wp-image-3693" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-9.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-9.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Amazing casting resin curing inside of the <a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0">Pikachu silicone mold</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Once you <a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0">pour the resin in the mold</a> try to remove any air bubbles you might see. I used a toothpick to remove any that were stuck on the features of Pikachu&#8217;s face. After the resin cures, carefully remove the Pokemon from <a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0">the mold</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-13.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Pikachu removed from the silicone mold" class="wp-image-3694" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-13.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-13.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Pikachu removed from the <a href="https://amzn.to/2TEC8C0">silicone mold</a></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Spray paint the Pokemon yellow</h3>

<p><em>Prior to painting, sand the backside of the pendants. This step may not be necessary for you, but if you notice rough edges and an even bottom, level it out with a little sanding on a flat surface.</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-14.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Spraying Pikachu with a base coat of golden sunset spray paint" class="wp-image-3695" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-14.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-14.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Spraying Pikachu with a base coat of <a href="https://amzn.to/2FCfW6x">golden sunset spray paint</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Grab a can of <a href="https://amzn.to/2FCfW6x">Golden Sunset spray paint</a> and cover the top and bottom sides of Pikachu with a layer of the golden paint.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Paint Pikachu&#8217;s face</h3>

<p>Once the base coat is dried, it&#8217;s time to paint the features of Pikachu&#8217;s face. This is the most difficult step of the project. It&#8217;s important that you take your time as the better the paint job, the better the project with look once it&#8217;s complete.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-16.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Painting Pikachu's face features" class="wp-image-3696" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-16.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_pikachu_pokemon_resin_pendant_necklace_ice_mold_geek_craft_tutorial_pika-16.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Painting Pikachu&#8217;s face features</figcaption></figure>

<p>Paint the tips of Pikachu&#8217;s ears black. I needed two layers of paint here.</p>

<p>A paint brush is too large for painting Pikachu&#8217;s eyes, eyelids and nose. Grab a needle or something with a sharp point to fill in those areas. Just dip the tip into paint and dab the needle into those sections of Pikachu&#8217;s face. You&#8217;ll need a steady hand and a little patience. </p>

<p>Easily the most frustrating step in the whole project.</p>

<p>Paint Pikachu&#8217;s cheeks and mouth with red paint and the light of his eye with white paint.</p>

<p>Allow the paint to dry before spraying the pendants with a clear gloss spray.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">DIY Pikachu Resin Charm</h2>

<p>Thanks for checking out my project. I hope you&#8217;ve been inspired to go make a set of Pokemon pendants too. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make R2-D2</h2>

<p>Here&#8217;s how to make R2-D2 in 5 easy steps.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Draw a grid on a piece of plywood.</h3>

<p>Use a ruler to mark grid lines space 0.75″ apart. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="703" height="527" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-3.jpg?resize=703%2C527&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drawing a grid onto a piece of plywood. The scale is 1 pixel = 3/4&#8243;</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Use a router and route a v groove along the grid lines</h3>

<p>Install a <a href="http://amzn.to/2EWs7xA">v-groove router bit</a> and <a href="http://amzn.to/2F8bazk">route along</a> the grid lines. Use a <a href="http://amzn.to/2BWzqmb">clamp edge guide</a> to ensure straight lines </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Using a router to create v grooves along the grid lines" class="wp-image-3639" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Using a router to create v grooves along the grid lines</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Cut out the silhouette of R2-D2&#8217;s shape</h3>

<p>I followed a pixel grid for R2-D2 that I found online. <a href="https://kandipatterns.com/kandiDesigner/113308">Here&#8217;s the source of my image</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="462" height="525" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?resize=462%2C525&#038;ssl=1" alt="r2-d2 pixel grid" class="wp-image-3646" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?w=462&amp;ssl=1 462w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?resize=264%2C300&amp;ssl=1 264w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px" /><figcaption>R2-D2 Pixel Grid | <a href="https://kandipatterns.com/kandiDesigner/113308">Source</a><br></figcaption></figure>

<p>Trace out the silhouette of R2-D2 and then cut out the R2-D2&#8217;s shape with a <a href="http://amzn.to/2FAjJ3H">jigsaw</a> (or use a bandsaw). </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drawing R2-D2's silhouette onto the plywood" class="wp-image-3640" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Drawing R2-D2&#8217;s silhouette onto the plywood</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Sand and prep the surface for paint</h3>

<p>Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of R2-D2.  I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Paint the pixels</h3>

<p>Paint each pixel on R2-D2. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a> to paint in the crevices. </p>

<p><br>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="Base coat of paint drying" class="wp-image-3642" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=320%2C320&amp;ssl=1 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Base coat of paint drying</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step3">STEP 3: CUT OUT SPINY&#8217;S SILHOUETTE</h3>

<p>Trace out the silhouette of Spiny and then cut out the Spiny’s shape with a <a href="http://amzn.to/2FAjJ3H">jigsaw</a>&nbsp;(or use a bandsaw).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-6.jpg?resize=750%2C1000&#038;ssl=1" alt="Marking out the silhouette of Spiny onto plywood" class="wp-image-3561" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-6.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-6.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Marking out the silhouette of Spiny onto plywood</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step4">STEP 4: PREP PIXEL SPINY FOR PAINTING</h3>

<p>Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Spiny.&nbsp; I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-8.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Spray primer before painting Spiny" class="wp-image-3562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-8.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-8.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Spray primer before painting Spiny</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step5">STEP 5: PAINT PIXEL SPINY</h3>

<p>Paint each pixel on Spiny. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a>&nbsp;to paint in the crevices. <br>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-21.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Spraying a gloss clear coat to protect the acrylic paint" class="wp-image-3563" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-21.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_spiny_lakitu_super_mario_bros_woodworking_pixel_art_geeky_nerdy_retro_gamer-21.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Spraying a gloss clear coat to protect the acrylic paint</figcaption></figure>

<p>The nice thing about working on Spiny at the same time is the characters use the exact same colors.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">DIY 8-BIT PIXEL SPINY</h2>

<p>I am really happy with how the 8-bit Super Mario characters turned out. Next up: Giant Goomba!</p>

<p>Hello everyone, today I’m sharing how to make 8-bit pixel Lakitu and Koopa Troopa from the NES version of Super Mario Bros. I followed the same technique I used to create <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/02/legend-zelda-8-bit-pixel-art-make-8-bit-link/">8-bit pixel Link from the original The Legend of Zelda game</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step4">STEP 4: PREP PIXEL LAKITU AND KOOPA TROOPA FOR PAINTING</h3>

<p>Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Lakitu and Koopa.&nbsp; I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-8.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Priming the surface of 8 bit Koopa Troopa and Lakitu" class="wp-image-3526" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-8.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-8.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Priming the surface of 8 bit Koopa Troopa and Lakitu</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step5">STEP 5: PAINT PIXEL LAKITU AND KOOPA TROOPA</h3>

<p>Paint each pixel on Koopa Troopa and Lakitu. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a>&nbsp;to paint in the crevices.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-9.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Base coat of green acrylic craft paint applied" class="wp-image-3527" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-9.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-9.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Base coat of green acrylic craft paint applied</figcaption></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="639" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-10.jpg?resize=750%2C639&#038;ssl=1" alt="Spice tan acrylic craft paint applied" class="wp-image-3528" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-10.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/8-bit_koopa_troopa_lakitu_super_mario_bros_nintendo_pixel_grid_wall_art_woodworking-10.jpg?resize=300%2C256&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Spice tan acrylic craft paint applied</figcaption></figure>

<p> <br>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat. </p>

<p>The nice thing about working on Lakitu and Koopa Troopa at the same time is the characters use the exact same colors.</p>

<p>I am really happy with how the 8-bit Super Mario characters turned out. Next up: Spiny!</p>

<p>Hello everyone, in this tutorial I&#8217;m sharing how to make an <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/03/super-mario-bros-8-bit-goomba-pixel-art-diy-tutorial/">8-bit end grain Goomba</a>! This was a scrap wood project I made using remains from my <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/06/make-tardis-end-grain-cutting-board/">Tardis end grain cutting board</a>. I held onto the leftovers from that project for over a year. I could not bring myself to toss them out.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make 8-bit End Grain Goomba</h2>

<p>End grain Goomba is my second 8-bit Goomba project. I&#8217;ve previously made a large pixel Goomba from 1/2&#8243; plywood. <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/03/super-mario-bros-8-bit-goomba-pixel-art-diy-tutorial/">CLICK HERE to read the tutorial on my original Goomba project</a>.</p>

<p>This project I created using leftover pieces 3/4&#8243; x 3/4&#8243; x 2&#8243; wood from my <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/06/make-tardis-end-grain-cutting-board/">Tardis end grain cutting board project</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-9.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-9.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Walnut, maple and cherry scraps cut into 1/4&quot; thick squares" class="wp-image-3487" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-9.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-9.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><figcaption>Walnut, maple and cherry scraps cut into 1/4&#8243; thick squares</figcaption></figure>

<p>Cut the scrap walnut, maple and cherry into 1/8&#8243; thick squares. I made these cuts on the bandsaw.</p>

<p>However, if I was not working with scrap wood I would have made most of my cut on the table saw.</p>

<p>For 8-bit Goomba you&#8217;ll need:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>52 walnut squares</li><li>42 maple squares</li><li>96 cherry squares</li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Glue wooden squares to plywood backer</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-21.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-21.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Gluing wooden pixels onto plywood forming Goomba" class="wp-image-3488" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-21.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/goomba_super_mario_bros_nes_nintendo_end_grain_cutting_board_woodworking_geek_diy_tutorial-21.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><figcaption>Gluing wooden pixels onto plywood forming Goomba</figcaption></figure>

<p>Use wood glue to secure the wooden squares to a piece of 1/4&#8243; plywood. I used my <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/03/super-mario-bros-8-bit-goomba-pixel-art-diy-tutorial/">previous Goomba project</a> as a pixel grid guide.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Apply a finish and enjoy!</h3>

<p>I used a beeswax and mineral oil mixture to finish Goomba. I installed a couple magnets on the backside to hang it on my garage door.</p>

<p>Despite a few flaws, I&#8217;m pretty happy with how Goomba turned out. From a distance it&#8217;s hard to notice the mistakes (alignment issues). </p>

<p>Thanks for checking out my project! I hope it inspires you to create some 8-bit decor!</p>

<p>Hello everyone, in this post I&#8217;m sharing details about my latest 3D print: a quest marker for <a href="https://amzn.to/2tEBTMy">The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim</a>. This was a project I started for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/artofgeekchallenge/">February&#8217;s Art of Geek Challenge</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3D Model</h3>

<p>When I first thought of the project, I had considered designing the model myself as an exercise for learning <a href="https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview">Fusion 360</a>. But time ran out and fortunately I didn&#8217;t have to reinvent the wheel. I found the model for the <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2827388">Skyrim quest marker on Thingiverse.</a> The model is designed by the user <br><a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/Chronotau">Chronotau.</a></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Companion 3D Print YouTube Video</h4>

<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mbPwyh1FKPY" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Print Time</h3>

<p>This was a short print. It took roughly 4 hours for the outer portion and another 2 hours for the inner portion. I printed the model at 20% infill with a brim on my <a href="https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/">Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer</a>. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D Printing the Skyrim event quest marker on a Prusa i3 MK2S printer in Atomic Filament's Black PLA" class="wp-image-3467" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>3D Printing the Skyrim event quest marker on a Prusa i3 MK2S printer in Atomic Filament&#8217;s Black PLA</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Filament</h3>

<p>I printed the outer portion of the quest marker in <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0778/8857/products/deep_black_pla_cropped_175_large.jpg?v=1537980342">Black PLA from Atomic Filament</a>. The inner portion of the marker was printed in <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/petg-3d-printer-filament-us-made-with-free-shipping/products/bright-white-opaque-petg-pro">White PETG from Atomic Filament</a>. (It was the only white filament I had on hand, otherwise I would have used PLA.)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="562" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?resize=562%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D printing the inner portion of the Skyrim quest marker in Atomic Filament's White PETG on a Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer" class="wp-image-3468" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?w=562&amp;ssl=1 562w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px" /><figcaption>3D printing the inner portion of the Skyrim quest marker in Atomic Filament&#8217;s White PETG on a Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer</figcaption></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-gallery columns-0 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Assembly</h3>

<p>The model was well designed and the two pieces snapped together. There is a slot in the model so no worries about alignment. I added a little super glue to keep the two pieces secured together.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Assembling the Skyrim quest marker with a little dab of CA glue" class="wp-image-3469" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Assembling the Skyrim quest marker with a little dab of CA glue</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3D Printed Skyrim Quest Marker</h3>

<p>This was a fun print and I&#8217;ll hang the quest marker up in my garage.</p>

<p>Hello everyone, today I’m sharing how to make 8-bit pixel Blooper from the NES version of Super Mario Bros. I created this project on a whim when I noticed I had a scrap piece of 1/2&#8243; plywood sitting on my garage floor. I followed the same technique I used to create <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/02/legend-zelda-8-bit-pixel-art-make-8-bit-link/">8-bit pixel Link from the original The Legend of Zelda game</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step1">Step 1: Draw 1.5&#8243; grid lines</h3>

<p>Use a ruler to mark grid lines space 1.5&#8243; apart.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/woodpecker_t-square_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-2.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drawing grid lines (Woodpecker's 24&quot; T-Square)" class="wp-image-3445" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/woodpecker_t-square_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/woodpecker_t-square_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-2.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Drawing grid lines (Woodpecker&#8217;s 24&#8243; T-Square)</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step2">Step 2: Route along the grid lines</h3>

<p>Install a <a href="http://amzn.to/2EWs7xA">v-groove router bit</a> and <a href="http://amzn.to/2F8bazk">route along</a> the grid lines. Use a <a href="http://amzn.to/2BWzqmb">clamp edge guide</a> to ensure straight lines.</p>

<p><script async="" defer="" src="//www.instagram.com/embed.js"></script></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step3">Step 3: Cut out Blooper&#8217;s silhouette</h3>

<p>Cut out the Blooper&#8217;s shape with a <a href="http://amzn.to/2FAjJ3H">jigsaw</a>&nbsp;(or use a bandsaw).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/excalibur_scroll_saw_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-15.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Cutting out the silhouette of Blooper on my Excalibur scroll saw" class="wp-image-3447" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/excalibur_scroll_saw_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-15.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/excalibur_scroll_saw_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-15.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Cutting out the silhouette of Blooper on my Excalibur scroll saw</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step4">Step 4: Prep Pixel Blooper for painting</h3>

<p>Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Blooper.&nbsp; I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/home_right_spray_tent_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-23.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3448" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/home_right_spray_tent_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-23.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/home_right_spray_tent_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-23.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Priming Blooper with white spray paint inside of the <a href="https://amzn.to/2U51Osi">spray paint tent</a></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="step5">Step 5: Paint Pixel Blooper</h3>

<p>Paint each pixel on Blooper. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a> to paint in the crevices.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/delta_cereamcoat_acrylic_craft_paint_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-33.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Painting Blooper with Delta Cereamcoat Acrylic Craft Paints (black, white, and gray)" class="wp-image-3449" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/delta_cereamcoat_acrylic_craft_paint_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-33.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/delta_cereamcoat_acrylic_craft_paint_8_BIT_super_mario_bros_nes_blooper_cheep_cheep_wall_art_pixel_tutorial_geek_decor-33.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Painting Blooper with Delta Cereamcoat Acrylic Craft Paints (black, white, and gray)</figcaption></figure>

<p>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat.</p>

<p><script async="" defer="" src="//www.instagram.com/embed.js"></script></p>

<p>The model is split into two parts: the bust and the stand. No supports are required. </p>

<p>I printed the model with <a href="https://www.polyalchemy.com/products/onyx-elixir-750g">PolyAlchemy&#8217;s Onyx Elixir&nbsp;PLA</a> and wow! That stuff looks incredible. </p>

<p>The bust took roughly 26 hours to print and the stand was another 8 hours or so. I printed it at 20% infill.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_darth_vader_bust_star_wars_david_ostman_my_mini_factory_polyalchemy_onyx_elixir_pla-5.jpg?resize=1000%2C667&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3397" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_darth_vader_bust_star_wars_david_ostman_my_mini_factory_polyalchemy_onyx_elixir_pla-5.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_darth_vader_bust_star_wars_david_ostman_my_mini_factory_polyalchemy_onyx_elixir_pla-5.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_darth_vader_bust_star_wars_david_ostman_my_mini_factory_polyalchemy_onyx_elixir_pla-5.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Stringy print fail</figcaption></figure>

<p>The first attempt at printing the model, I tried printing it at 0% infill. Unfortunately, it failed. I think probably because the Elixir filament is a bit flexible and and some point during the print it flexed and triggered a chain reaction of fail. </p>

<p>This is a wonderful model, and I can&#8217;t wait to print more of Mr. <a href="https://www.myminifactory.com/users/eastman">Östman</a>&#8216;s work!</p>
