<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make R2-D2</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s how to make R2-D2 in 5 easy steps.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Draw a grid on a piece of plywood.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use a ruler to mark grid lines space 0.75″ apart. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="703" height="527" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-3.jpg?resize=703%2C527&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drawing a grid onto a piece of plywood. The scale is 1 pixel = 3/4&#8243;</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Use a router and route a v groove along the grid lines</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Install a <a href="http://amzn.to/2EWs7xA">v-groove router bit</a> and <a href="http://amzn.to/2F8bazk">route along</a> the grid lines. Use a <a href="http://amzn.to/2BWzqmb">clamp edge guide</a> to ensure straight lines </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Using a router to create v grooves along the grid lines" class="wp-image-3639" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Using a router to create v grooves along the grid lines</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Cut out the silhouette of R2-D2&#8217;s shape</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I followed a pixel grid for R2-D2 that I found online. <a href="https://kandipatterns.com/kandiDesigner/113308">Here&#8217;s the source of my image</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="462" height="525" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?resize=462%2C525&#038;ssl=1" alt="r2-d2 pixel grid" class="wp-image-3646" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?w=462&amp;ssl=1 462w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/r2_d2.png?resize=264%2C300&amp;ssl=1 264w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px" /><figcaption>R2-D2 Pixel Grid | <a href="https://kandipatterns.com/kandiDesigner/113308">Source</a><br></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trace out the silhouette of R2-D2 and then cut out the R2-D2&#8217;s shape with a <a href="http://amzn.to/2FAjJ3H">jigsaw</a> (or use a bandsaw). </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drawing R2-D2's silhouette onto the plywood" class="wp-image-3640" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Drawing R2-D2&#8217;s silhouette onto the plywood</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Sand and prep the surface for paint</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of R2-D2.  I used scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Paint the pixels</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Paint each pixel on R2-D2. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a> to paint in the crevices. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="Base coat of paint drying" class="wp-image-3642" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-7.jpg?resize=320%2C320&amp;ssl=1 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Base coat of paint drying</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8-Bit R2-D2</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Install some hanging hardware and enjoy! </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-1.jpg?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="8-bit R2-D2 (Star Wars DIY)" class="wp-image-3643" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-1.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-1.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-1.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/diy_8-bit_r2d2_pixel_craft_star_wars_woodworking_tutorial_handmade_with_ashley-1.jpg?resize=320%2C320&amp;ssl=1 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>8-bit R2-D2 (Star Wars DIY)</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to make 8-bit End Grain Goomba</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">End grain Goomba is my second 8-bit Goomba project. I&#8217;ve previously made a large pixel Goomba from 1/2&#8243; plywood. <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2018/03/super-mario-bros-8-bit-goomba-pixel-art-diy-tutorial/">CLICK HERE to read the tutorial on my original Goomba project</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This project I created using leftover pieces 3/4&#8243; x 3/4&#8243; x 2&#8243; wood from my <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/06/make-tardis-end-grain-cutting-board/">Tardis end grain cutting board project</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Cut wood into 1/8&#8243; thick squares</h3>

<h3 id="step4">Step 4: Prep Pixel Link for painting</h3>
<p>Sand between the grooves and sand the surface of Link.  I use scrap piece of wood to support the sandpaper as I sanded between the grooves.</p>
<h3 id="step5">Step 5: Paint Pixel Link</h3>
<p>Paint each pixel on Link. Painting between the grooves is a little tricky. Use painters tape to maintain clean lines. I was impatient and used <a href="http://amzn.to/2FGqRMd">paint brushes for painting miniatures</a> to paint in the crevices.</p>
<p>If necessary, apply multiple layers of paint. Once the paint is dried, protect the finish with a clear coat.</p>

<h2>DIY 8-Bit Pixel Link</h2>
<p>I am really happy with how pixel Link turned out. The process of creating him was less tedious than my <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/08/diy-giant-mario-pixel-wall-art/">pixel Mario build</a>.  Painting the pixels required more work, but the extra work involved there pales in comparison to the work I avoided by using a piece of plywood.</p>

<p>For ease of use, I cut the plywood into manageable chunks.</p>

<li>1&#215;6 &#8211; 21&#8243; (4)</li>
</ul>
<p>Mill the 1&#215;6 with a jointer and a planer prior to starting step 1.  For details on that process, check out my blog post on <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/02/make-wooden-cutting-board/">How to Make a Wooden Cutting Board</a>.</p>
<h2>How to build the Star Wars End Table</h2>
<p>I have SketchUp plans in the works. This is something I hope to make available before the weekend is up.</p>
<h3>Step 1: Glue up the 1&#215;6 boards</h3>
<p><div id="attachment_2606" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-4.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2606" class="size-full wp-image-2606" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-4.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="1x6 edge jointed panel" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2606" class="wp-caption-text">1&#215;6 edge jointed panel</p></div></p>
<p>First up, create a panel with the 1&#215;6 boards. Glue the edges and clamp the boards together. After 15 minutes have passed, use a scraper to remove excess glue from the squeeze out.  Let the glue dry completely before removing the clamps.</p>
<h3>Step 2: Create dados</h3>
<p>I opted for dado joints for this project because alignment critical.  I felt a dado was the best form of joinery for the project.  I whipped up a little jig for my router to create dados.  The jig was inspired by a <a href="http://www.popularwoodworking.com/">Popular Woodworking Magazine</a> <a href="http://www.popularwoodworking.com/techniques/router_dado_jig1/2">article</a>.  You can read about it <a href="http://www.popularwoodworking.com/techniques/router_dado_jig1/2">here</a>.</p>
<p>On a quarter sheet of plywood mark off the center from the short side and long side.  Create a dado along the lines. Repeat this step for the other end of the quarter sheet of plywood.</p>
<p>At the midpoint of the 20” x 22” pieces of plywood, create a dado on each side.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2608" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_woodworking_wooden_sign_rebel_symbol_table-2.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2608" class="size-full wp-image-2608" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_woodworking_wooden_sign_rebel_symbol_table-2.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Creating dadoes in plywood with a router" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_woodworking_wooden_sign_rebel_symbol_table-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_woodworking_wooden_sign_rebel_symbol_table-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2608" class="wp-caption-text">Creating dados in plywood with a router</p></div></p>
<h3>Step 3: Cut circles</h3>
<p>With a <a href="http://amzn.to/2p8idw2">router</a> and a <a href="http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?u=1470368&amp;b=75036&amp;m=12070&amp;afftrack=&amp;urllink=www%2Erockler%2Ecom%2Frockler%2Dtrim%2Drouter%2Dcircle%2Djig">circle cutting jig</a>, cut out 4 circles.  (Alternatively you can use a <a href="http://amzn.to/2pIkCzq">jigsaw</a>.)</p>
<ul>
<li>20&#8243; diameter circle with the dados (2)</li>
<li>20&#8243; diameter circle from the 1&#215;6 panel (1)</li>
<li>19 1/2&#8243; diameter circle (1)</li>
</ul>
<p>Cut the 19 1/2&#8243; circle into quarters.</p>

<h3>Step 4: Notch out the table &#8220;legs&#8221;</h3>
<p>Find the center of the 20&#8243; x 22&#8243; pieces of plywood and notch out a portion of the board to make a lap joint with the other table leg.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2610" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-14.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2610" class="size-full wp-image-2610" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-14.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Plywood joint" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-14.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-14.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2610" class="wp-caption-text">Plywood joint</p></div></p>

<ol>
<li>Place 1 circle with dado side up on a flat surface.</li>
<li>Attach the legs.</li>
<li>Attach the base top.</li>

<p>Stain the table top.  I used ECOS Paints Woodshield (Pine Needles).</p>
<h3>Step 7: Paint the Rebel Symbol</h3>
<p>I used my Silhouette to create a Rebel stencil about 16&#8243; in diameter.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2616" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-53.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2616" class="size-full wp-image-2616" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-53.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Rebel Logo stencil" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-53.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/diy_star_wars_rebel_symbol_logo_sign_table_woodworking-53.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2616" class="wp-caption-text">Rebel Logo stencil</p></div></p>
<p>I traced an outline of the symbol and painted the symbol red.  Allow the paint to dry before continuing onto the next step.</p>

<h3>Step 8: Add glitter</h3>
<p>Add glitter to the Rebel symbol.  I used <a href="http://amzn.to/2qHlALq">Mod Podge</a> to adhere the glitter the table top. Once the <a href="http://amzn.to/2qHlALq">Mod Podge</a> dries, seal the glitter with a coat or two of clear matte spray finish.</p>

<p>Before applying <a href="http://amzn.to/2p8q9xj">resin</a>, try to remove as much of the loose glitter as possible.  Mix the <a href="http://amzn.to/2p8q9xj">resin</a> according to the package instructions and apply a coat to the surface of the table top.  Allow for it to completely cure before continuing onto the next step.</p>

<p>I used a <a href="http://amzn.to/2gUdOMU">3.5&#8243; hole saw</a> to cut out my circles.  I don&#8217;t recommend this method.  However if you do decide to use a hole saw, please handle with care. <p><div id="attachment_2287" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-3.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2287" class="size-full wp-image-2287" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-3.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Drilling hole in BB-8's head" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-3.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-3.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2287" class="wp-caption-text">Drilling hole in BB-8&#8217;s head</p></div></p>
<p>On each 3.5&#8243; circle drill a 1/2&#8243; deep hole with the 1/2&#8243; bit.</p>
<h3>Step 4: Drill a hole for the handle</h3>
<p>Find the 3.5&#8243; circle with a hole for the axle. Drill another 1/2&#8243; deep hole with the 1/2&#8243; bit 45 degrees from the hole for BB-8&#8217;s head.</p>
<h3>Step 5: Drill two tiny holes for antennas</h3>
<p>Find the 3.5&#8243; circle with one hole.  Drill two 1/16&#8243; holes on the opposite end of the existing hole.</p>
<h3>Step 6: Cut the dowels</h3>
<p>I recommend cutting the dowels to fit.  BB-8&#8217;s head should be slightly covered by the body.  You will need a short dowel (~ 1 1/2&#8243;) piece for connecting the head to the body and another short piece for connecting the two wheels (~ 1 3/4&#8243;).  What&#8217;s remaining will be the handle for the toy.</p>
<p>Also cut two pieces of 1/8&#8243; dowel (BB-8&#8217;s antennas).  My tiny dowel pieces were about 1 1/2&#8243; and 1&#8243; long.</p>
<h3>Step 7: Tidy up the circles</h3>
<p><div id="attachment_2289" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-6.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2289" class="size-full wp-image-2289" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-6.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Circle edges are rounded over" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-6.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-6.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2289" class="wp-caption-text">Circle edges are rounded over</p></div></p>
<p>Round over the edges of each circle with a 1/4&#8243; roundover router bit.   Sand the surface of each circle.</p>
<h3>Step 8: Prep the surface for paint</h3>
<p><div id="attachment_2290" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-7.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2290" class="size-full wp-image-2290" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-7.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Spray priming" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-7.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-7.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2290" class="wp-caption-text">Spray priming</p></div></p>
<p>Prime each circle with white spray primer.</p>
<h3>Step 9: Transfer BB-8 pattern onto the circles</h3>
<p>Instead of freehand drawing BB-8&#8217;s pattern onto the circles, I cheated. I found an <a href="https://fandads.blogspot.com/2015/12/coloring-with-force-thanks-to-star-wars.html">activity pack</a> that contained several coloring book pages from The Force Awakens one of which is BB-8 (it&#8217;s on page 2).  Print two copies enlarged at 125%.</p>
<p>I used <a href="http://amzn.to/2gBwpNn">Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium</a> to transfer the coloring page outline onto the circles.  Follow the instructions <a href="https://www.plaidonline.com/blog/post/2015/04/14/mod-podge-photo-transfer-medium-how-to-use-it-and-create-a-project">here</a> on how to use it.  Now here&#8217;s where I made a really awful mistake. I ran out of normal copy paper, but I had some colored copy paper. I mistakenly believed that the medium would only transfer my laser printer toner ink, but it also transferred pigments in the paper. Oops!</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2291" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-9.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2291" class="size-full wp-image-2291" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-9.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Trouble with the transfer" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-9.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-9.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2291" class="wp-caption-text">Trouble with the transfer</p></div></p>
<h3>Step 10: Paint in the lines</h3>
<p>Fill in BB-8&#8217;s colors.  Be careful to stay between the lines.  I used a black marker to touch up in areas where I painted over the line.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2294" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-11.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2294" class="size-full wp-image-2294" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-11.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Painting BB-8's body" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-11.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-11.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2294" class="wp-caption-text">Painting BB-8&#8217;s body</p></div></p>
<p>Paint the 1&#8243; split ball black, the 1/2&#8243; dowel cap orange, and 1/16&#8243; dowels gray.</p>

<h3>Step 11: Add a layer of dimension</h3>
<p>Once the paint has dried, coat the 1&#8243; split ball with triple thick gloss glaze.  Cover the small black dot on BB-8&#8217;s head with a few drops of the Mod Podge Dimensional Glaze. The glazes give BB-8&#8217;s eyes a glass-like look.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_2293" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-13.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2293" class="size-full wp-image-2293" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-13.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Adding Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to one of BB-8's &quot;eyes&quot;" width="750" height="500" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-13.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-13.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2293" class="wp-caption-text">Adding Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to one of BB-8&#8217;s &#8220;eyes&#8221;</p></div></p>
<h3>Step 12: Seal</h3>
<p>Apply your favorite sealer to protect the paint.</p>
<h3>Step 13: Assemble and enjoy!</h3>
<p><div id="attachment_2296" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-12.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2296" class="size-full wp-image-2296" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-12.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Assembling BB-8" width="750" height="500" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-12.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/diy_bb8_push_toy_star_wars_force_awakens_woodworking_christmas-12.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2296" class="wp-caption-text">Assembling BB-8</p></div></p>

<p>Attach BB-8&#8217;s head and handle with glue as well.</p>

<h2>How to Make a Resin Darth Vader Necklace</h2>
<h3>Step 1:  Mix together equal parts of resin and hardener.</h3>
<p>This step may vary depending upon which brand of resin you choose.  (My personal preference is <a href="https://www.amazon.com/ICE-Resin%C2%AE-Kit-mixing-sticks/dp/B00HTRUHGE/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=ZCFE65E2OI4KOVST&amp;creativeASIN=B00HTRUHGE" target="_blank">Ice Resin</a>, but EasyCast has worked well for me most of the time, and it&#8217;s cheaper.)  Follow the box instructions and take the recommended safety precautions.  I purchased a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Medicine-Cup-100-Pack/dp/B0000XQQYG/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=MSPP4XJAAJCMICVP&amp;creativeASIN=B0000XQQYG" target="_blank">bag </a>of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Medicine-Cup-100-Pack/dp/B0000XQQYG/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=MSPP4XJAAJCMICVP&amp;creativeASIN=B0000XQQYG" target="_blank">disposable medicine cups</a> and use the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Medicine-Cup-100-Pack/dp/B0000XQQYG/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=MSPP4XJAAJCMICVP&amp;creativeASIN=B0000XQQYG" target="_blank">cups </a>for both measuring and mixing together the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Environmental-Technology-16-Ounce-Casting-Craft/dp/B000GBT8V0/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=3MPID4VV5HDU2F2L&amp;creativeASIN=B000GBT8V0" target="_blank">resin</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s critical that you take care and  ensure the resin is measured at the correct amounts.  Also make sure the two parts are thoroughly mixed together.  (I have ruined several pendants because the resin never hardened because of a misstep at this step.)</p>
<p>Once the resin is mixed, add in color.  You can use<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Castin-Craft-transparent-colors-resin/dp/B00A1ECEW2/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=3H65PXVOKOLS3JH4&amp;creativeASIN=B00A1ECEW2"> resin dyes</a>, but I think simple <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=delta%20ceramcoat&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Adelta%20ceramcoat&amp;tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;linkId=VZHEKWKP3BMJM3YZ" target="_blank">acrylic craft paint</a> works very well.  You do want to be careful.  A little paint can go a long way for coloring the resin.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_1476" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-6.jpg?ssl=1" rel="attachment wp-att-1476"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1476" class="size-full wp-image-1476" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-6.jpg?resize=700%2C2800&#038;ssl=1" alt="Mixing together resin" width="700" height="2800" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-6.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-6.jpg?resize=75%2C300&amp;ssl=1 75w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-6.jpg?resize=256%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 256w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-1476" class="wp-caption-text">Mixing together resin</p></div></p>
<h3>Step 2:  Add in glitter.</h3>
<p>To add a nice bit of sparkle, sprinkle in a bit of glitter.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_1477" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-13.jpg?ssl=1" rel="attachment wp-att-1477"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1477" class="size-full wp-image-1477" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-13.jpg?resize=700%2C1050&#038;ssl=1" alt="Glitter" width="700" height="1050" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-13.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-13.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-13.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-1477" class="wp-caption-text">Glitter</p></div></p>
<p>It is tempting to become very generous with glitter as you sprinkle it into the resin.  A little glitter can go a long way as well.   Too much glitter and you may end up with something like this:</p>
<p><div id="attachment_1478" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-5.jpg?ssl=1" rel="attachment wp-att-1478"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1478" class="size-full wp-image-1478" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-5.jpg?resize=700%2C1400&#038;ssl=1" alt="Too much glitter" width="700" height="1400" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-5.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-5.jpg?resize=150%2C300&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-5.jpg?resize=512%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 512w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-1478" class="wp-caption-text">Too much glitter</p></div></p>
<p>Although, it may be just the look you&#8217;re going for.</p>
<h3>Step 3:  Pour the resin into the mold.</h3>
<p>Pour the resin mix into your <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jollylife-Silicone-Lovers-Party-Theme/dp/B007JN8918/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=DKY5JDKUE7ZYE2S3&amp;creativeASIN=B007JN8918" target="_blank">silicon mold</a>.   Once your <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jollylife-Silicone-Lovers-Party-Theme/dp/B007JN8918/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=DKY5JDKUE7ZYE2S3&amp;creativeASIN=B007JN8918" target="_blank">ice mold</a> has come into contact with resin, it must never be used for food consumption again.</p>

<h3>Step 4:   Remove air bubbles.</h3>
<p>As you mixed your resin, you might have noticed air bubbles forming.  You can remove the bubbles with heat.  I used my <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Martha-Stewart-Crafts-Heat-Tool/dp/B002YIO854/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=ZOW6PRVBRN6VMRUN&amp;creativeASIN=B002YIO854" target="_blank">Martha Stewart heat tool</a> to remove all the air bubbles from my pendants.</p>

<p>Once you&#8217;ve removed the last air bubble, set the mold aside for 24 hours to allow for the resin to cure.</p>
<h3>Step 5:  De-mold the resin Darth Vader pendants.</h3>
<p>After 24 hours have passed, your resin pendants should be cured.  The cure times may vary depending upon which resin you use.  Remove the pendants from the silicon mold.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_1481" style="width: 710px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-21.jpg?ssl=1" rel="attachment wp-att-1481"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1481" class="size-full wp-image-1481" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-21.jpg?resize=700%2C1050&#038;ssl=1" alt="Lots of Darth Vaders" width="700" height="1050" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-21.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-21.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/diy_resin_star_wars_darth_vader_necklace_jewelry_tutorial-21.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-1481" class="wp-caption-text">Lots of Darth Vaders</p></div></p>
<p>At this point you may want to sand the edges down.  Do this in a well ventilated room wearing a dust mask.</p>
<h3>Step 6:  Attach a leaf bail and string the pendant with a necklace chain.</h3>
<p>Attach a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Rockin-Beads-Pendant-Require-Cleaning/dp/B00CBZP6XS/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=IFRF6MEXLRSES2RX&amp;creativeASIN=B00CBZP6XS">leaf bail</a> to the Darth Vader pendant with <a href="https://www.amazon.com/E6000-237032-Craft-Adhesive-Clear/dp/B004BPHQWU/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=handmwithashl-20&amp;linkCode=w01&amp;linkId=4FOPCOBCPT2MN24E&amp;creativeASIN=B004BPHQWU">E6000 glue</a> and allow it to dry.   Now you ready to wear your piece of jewelry!</p>
