<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I 3D printed the equivalent of a paint swatch that you may find in the paint section of a hardware store. The model for the filament sample is available for <a href="http://www.cardboardbits.com/3d-printed-pitchcar-loop/">download on Thingiverse</a>. There is also a <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1295695">handy holder</a> to store and flip through the samples.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love this model because it provides an accurate representation of how a filament will look at different textures. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can flip through the samples without any falling out of the holder.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever I load a roll of filament for the first time, I print one of the filament sample cards. Not only does it give me a preview of how the color of a print will look like, it&#8217;s also a chance to tune the slicer settings to best suite the filament I have loaded.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Filament Samples</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The remainder of this blog post will serve as digital catalog of all the filaments I&#8217;ve printed so far along with pictures of how the filament looks like printed. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Atomic Filament</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Atomic Filament is my go-to brand for filament for two main reasons: great quality and it&#8217;s made in the USA. Shipment has always been fast and prompt and Atomic Filament has a great selection of colors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I typically print Atomic Filament at 195 degrees Celsius. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Aqua Translucent</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fillamentum creates one of my favorite colors of filament: Vertigo Grey. I&#8217;m a big fan of their glitter-style filaments. The layers in these filaments blend together making the print lines difficult to see. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I big fan of PolyAlchemy&#8217;s Elixir line of filaments. The Elixir filaments have beautiful sheen and are perfect for printing busts or other prints whose primary purchase is for display.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hatchbox 3D Wood Filament</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I printed the venus box in <a href="https://amzn.to/2uersje">Hatchbox 3D&#8217;s Wood Filament</a>. I owned this spool of filament for about a year and half and it sat unused because I was super nervous about print failure. In the end, I was worried about nothing! </p>

</script><br>
<script src="//z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US"></script></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It printed really easy. I started with the default PLA profile on Prusa Edition of Slic3r and bumped down the print temperatures by 15 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It took about 13 hours to print the parts to the box.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Assembling the Venus Box</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The box assembles with no additional hardware. The doors slides together and fits inside of the outer shell. Then everything twists onto the inner shell. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It takes a little tinkering to get everything aligned and screwed on correctly.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">UPDATE #1:</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It just occurred to me that part of my problem with the initial box was the lid was a little too loose. Currently printing another cover that should have a tighter fit and allow for a more smooth twist control.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">UPDATE #2:</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yup, I printed the tighter version of the box cover and it&#8217;s a perfect fit!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Staining Hatchbox 3D&#8217;s Wood Filament</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I printed two boxes and stained one. Prior to staining the box I sanded the parts along the print lines. This helps the stain take better.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-7.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Sanding wood filament prior to staining" class="wp-image-3574" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-7.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-7.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Sanding wood filament prior to staining</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I used a dark walnut stain and applied it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The stain took better than I imagined it would. I used an eco-friendly stain, which from past experience doesn&#8217;t penetrate wood as well as some of the more traditional stains. I think if I used a normal stain I could get an even better finish.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3D Printed Wood Venus Box</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a really amazing box design. I&#8217;ve had a lot of fun with it. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-5.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D Printing Venus Box with the door lids closed" class="wp-image-3575" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wood_filament_hatchbox_venus_box_3d_printing_stain_woodworking_prusa_i3-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>3D Printing Venus Box with the door lids closed</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s probably not a very practical box, but it would be a great desk accessory for storing items like paper clips or tacks.</p>

<p>Hello everyone, in this post I&#8217;m sharing photos of a really neat 3D print: <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3048278">a giant LEGO parrot</a>! This model was designed by one of my favorite 3D designers on Thingiverse: <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/agepbiz/about">Stian Ervik Wahlvaag (agepbiz)</a>.</p>
<h2>The 3D Model</h2>
<p>There are two variants of the LEGO parrot. The one I printed the basic version. The original and more interesting version of the project involves a little electronics.</p>
<p>Stian has a really great YouTube video on the project. I highly recommend checking it out:<br>
<iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UP9aeEeXeSw" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<h2>Filament</h2>
<p>I printed the body of the Parrot in <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/opaque-pla-filaments-1/products/1-kg-red-pla-filament">Atomic Filament&#8217;s Perfect Red PLA</a>. The beak is in <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0778/8857/products/Neon_Yellow_UV_Reactive_PLA_large.jpg?v=1541019219">Atomic Filament&#8217;s Neon Yellow UV Reactive PLA</a>. The wings are in <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/petg-3d-printer-filament-us-made-with-free-shipping/products/bright-white-opaque-petg-pro">Atomic Filament&#8217;s White PETG</a> and <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/opaque-pla-filaments-1/products/emerald-pearl-swirl-pla-filament">Emerald Pearl Swirl PLA</a>.</p>
<h2>Assembly</h2>
<div id="attachment_3552" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-2.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3552" class="size-full wp-image-3552" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-2.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="All the parts to the 3D printed Parrot" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-3552" class="wp-caption-text">All the parts to the 3D printed Parrot</p></div>
<p>I wasn&#8217;t able to print the entire parrot body on my printer. The z-axis wasn&#8217;t large enough so I split the model into two parts.</p>
<p>I used a little CA to attach the two halves. I also used CA glue to attach the wing portions. The beak and eyes were such a snug fit I didn&#8217;t need to glue them in place.</p>
<h2>3D Printed Human Scaled LEGO Parrot</h2>
<p>The giant LEGO parrot is a really neat model and when I have the time, I look forward to printing and assembling the electronic version!</p>
<div id="attachment_3553" style="width: 760px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-5.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3553" class="size-full wp-image-3553" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-5.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="A human scale 3D printed ParrotA human scale 3D printed Parrot" width="750" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-5.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/giant_lego_parrot_human_scale_life_size_thingiverse_agepbiz_3d_print_prusa_i3_atomic_filament-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-3553" class="wp-caption-text">A human scale 3D printed Parrot</p></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hello everyone, in this post I&#8217;m sharing details about my latest 3D print: a quest marker for <a href="https://amzn.to/2tEBTMy">The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim</a>. This was a project I started for <a href="https://www.instagram.com/artofgeekchallenge/">February&#8217;s Art of Geek Challenge</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3D Model</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first thought of the project, I had considered designing the model myself as an exercise for learning <a href="https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview">Fusion 360</a>. But time ran out and fortunately I didn&#8217;t have to reinvent the wheel. I found the model for the <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2827388">Skyrim quest marker on Thingiverse.</a> The model is designed by the user <br><a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/Chronotau">Chronotau.</a></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Companion 3D Print YouTube Video</h4>

<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mbPwyh1FKPY" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Print Time</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was a short print. It took roughly 4 hours for the outer portion and another 2 hours for the inner portion. I printed the model at 20% infill with a brim on my <a href="https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/">Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer</a>. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D Printing the Skyrim event quest marker on a Prusa i3 MK2S printer in Atomic Filament's Black PLA" class="wp-image-3467" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>3D Printing the Skyrim event quest marker on a Prusa i3 MK2S printer in Atomic Filament&#8217;s Black PLA</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Filament</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I printed the outer portion of the quest marker in <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0778/8857/products/deep_black_pla_cropped_175_large.jpg?v=1537980342">Black PLA from Atomic Filament</a>. The inner portion of the marker was printed in <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/petg-3d-printer-filament-us-made-with-free-shipping/products/bright-white-opaque-petg-pro">White PETG from Atomic Filament</a>. (It was the only white filament I had on hand, otherwise I would have used PLA.)</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="562" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?resize=562%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D printing the inner portion of the Skyrim quest marker in Atomic Filament's White PETG on a Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer" class="wp-image-3468" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?w=562&amp;ssl=1 562w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-3.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px" /><figcaption>3D printing the inner portion of the Skyrim quest marker in Atomic Filament&#8217;s White PETG on a Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer</figcaption></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-gallery columns-0 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Assembly</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The model was well designed and the two pieces snapped together. There is a slot in the model so no worries about alignment. I added a little super glue to keep the two pieces secured together.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="562" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?resize=750%2C562&#038;ssl=1" alt="Assembling the Skyrim quest marker with a little dab of CA glue" class="wp-image-3469" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/skyrimquestmarker3dprintedthingiversepropvideogame-4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Assembling the Skyrim quest marker with a little dab of CA glue</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3D Printed Skyrim Quest Marker</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was a fun print and I&#8217;ll hang the quest marker up in my garage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hello everyone, today I&#8217;m sharing build details on my latest shop project: a mobile <a href="https://amzn.to/2TXO6Yt">systainer</a> cart! This was a really easy build that combined two of my favorite hobbies: <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/category/woodworking/">woodworking</a> and <a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/category/3d-printing/">3D printing</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buying <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ed7ZVS">the official Festool systainer cart</a> will cost you about $100. I was able to build mine for just the cost of the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J4FED5E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1">caster</a><a href="https://amzn.to/2EdnTzk"> </a><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J4FED5E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1">wheels</a>. (I bought these <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J4FED5E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1">2&#8243; </a><a href="https://amzn.to/2EdnTzk">ones on Amazon!</a>) The rest of the supplies I already had on hand.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the work for the systainer cart was cut out for me because the <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2946645">model for the 3D printed cleats is available on Thingiverse</a>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s get started with the build!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tools and Supplies</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The following items are some of the tools and supplies I gathered to build the mobile systainer cart.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tools</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2DHwl8F">a 3D printer</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2Ed8f7b">Table saw</a> </li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2TRgknB">Hand saw and saw guide</a></li><li>Bandsaw</li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Supplies</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/opaque-pla-filaments-1/products/black-pla-filament">Atomic Filament Black PLA</a></li><li>Scrap 2&#215;4</li><li>Screws and washers (4 per caster)</li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2EcK7l3">Wood glue</a></li><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2IiaHNU">Double Sided Tape</a></li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can keep the project simple and use a <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ee8peM">pocket hole jig</a> to join the base boards together, but I thought this project would be a great opportunity to practice other forms of woodworking joinery: specifically, half lap joints.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only other time I&#8217;ve made half lap joints was for when I built my <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJzzu9pRU9Y">mobile base for the Ridgid Jointer</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s how I built the systainer cart.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: 3D print the cleats</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/festool_cleats_3d_printed_printing_atomic_filament_black_pla_thingiverse_systainer_woodworking_2x4.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D printed cleats for a DIY Festool SYS-CART" class="wp-image-3415" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/festool_cleats_3d_printed_printing_atomic_filament_black_pla_thingiverse_systainer_woodworking_2x4.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/festool_cleats_3d_printed_printing_atomic_filament_black_pla_thingiverse_systainer_woodworking_2x4.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/festool_cleats_3d_printed_printing_atomic_filament_black_pla_thingiverse_systainer_woodworking_2x4.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption><a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2946645">3D printed cleats for a DIY Festool SYS-CART</a></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Download the <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2946645">STL files via Thingiverse</a> and 3D print them. I used <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/opaque-pla-filaments-1/products/black-pla-filament">Black PLA from Atomic Filament</a>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Mill the 2&#215;4</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="Square 2x4s" class="wp-image-3416" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-2.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-2.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Square 2x4s</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I used some 2&#215;4 scraps to construct the base. Because I decided to use half laps for my joinery, I felt that it was worth it to go the extra mile and square the boards.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Cut the 2&#215;4 to size</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/diy_festool_systainer_cart_syscart_sys_woodworking_caster_wheel-5.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="2x4s cut to size for the Festool systainer cart base" class="wp-image-3417" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/diy_festool_systainer_cart_syscart_sys_woodworking_caster_wheel-5.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/diy_festool_systainer_cart_syscart_sys_woodworking_caster_wheel-5.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/diy_festool_systainer_cart_syscart_sys_woodworking_caster_wheel-5.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>2x4s cut to size for the Festool systainer cart base</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To measure the size of the 2&#215;4, I dry fitted the cleats on the base of one of my systainers and measured the distance between the parts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I took that measurement and added 1/8&#8243; to the lengths.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My cut list is:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>10 3/4&#8243; (2)</li><li>15 3/8&#8243; (2)</li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.ashleygrenon.com/2017/05/diy-ridgid-jointer-mobile-base/">First time I made a half lap joint</a>, I used my <a href="https://amzn.to/2X3lgaN">circular saw</a> and a chisel. This was a tedious process so this time around I opted to use my bandsaw and a <a href="https://amzn.to/2TRgknB">handsaw</a>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Assemble the base</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-3.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="Assembling the Festool systainer cart base with wood glue and clamps" class="wp-image-3419" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-3.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-3.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-3.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Assembling the Festool systainer cart base with wood glue and clamps</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I assembled the base with wood glue and clamps. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 6: Install the 3D printed cleats</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-6.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="3D printed Festool systainer cleats screwed to the 2x4 base" class="wp-image-3420" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-6.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-6.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-6.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>3D printed Festool systainer cleats screwed to the 2&#215;4 base</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To install the cleats and avoid issues with aligment, I dry fitted the cleats onto the base of a systainer and <a href="https://amzn.to/2IiaHNU">applied double sided tape</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the <a href="https://amzn.to/2IiaHNU">tape</a> was on each cleat, I carefully placed the wooden base on top it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, I removed the base from the systainer and screwed the cleats to the base.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 7: Install the caster wheels</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-7.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="Installing caster wheels to the underside of the 2x4 base" class="wp-image-3421" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-7.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-7.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.ashleygrenon.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/3d_printed_festool_cleats_thingiverse_woodworking_mobile_base_caster_wheels-7.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Installing caster wheels to the underside of the 2&#215;4 base</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, install the <a href="https://amzn.to/2EdnTzk">2&#8243; caster wheels</a> and enjoy!</p>

<p>I recently 3D printed a photography sweep stand for taking pictures of small items. The stand is a model that I <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1671168">found on Thingiverse</a>. The model was designed by the user <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/mistertech">mistertech</a>. I printed the photography sweep stand in some <a href="https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/filament/43-blue-pla-filament-1kg.html">blue PLA</a> that I purchased from Prusa Research when I purchased my Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer.</p>
<p>I used the default PLA settings in the Prusa Edition of Sli3er.</p>

<p>I recently assembled my 3D printer and it has been running just about every day since. I&#8217;ll start writing blog posts featuring the items that I have 3D printed. Today, I&#8217;m sharing a pair of cable holders that I&#8217;ve printed. My husband had been complaining about having to re-route the wires at his desk whenever he unplugged his laptop. After a little searching, I found a cable holder model on <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/">Thingiverse</a>. The model is <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:70549">thing:70549</a> designed by <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/bardiaesm">the user bardiaesm</a>.</p>

<p>I printed the cable holders on my Prusa i3 MK2S 3D printer.  It took 1 hour and 15 minutes to print two cable holders. I printed the holders in <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/collections/translucent-petg/products/aqua-translucent-petg-pro">Aqua Translucent PETG Pro filament</a> from <a href="https://atomicfilament.com/">Atomic Filament</a>. I used the default PET profile in Prusa Edition of Slic3r. I made a slight modification to the fan speed: dropped it from min 30 to min 25 and dropped the max 50 to max 45. Previously, I had an error with printing PETG: bed thermal runaway. After making that modification, I have not had any issues printing with PETG.</p>

<p>I attached the cable holders to the desk with double sided <a href="https://amzn.to/2BgsB00">carpet tape</a>. This has kept the cable holders secured to the desk with no signs of detaching.</p>

<p>I am pretty happy with how the print came out and look forward to printing more household solutions in the near future.</p>
